Choral Stage 2016

CHORAL STAGE!  is a special project of the BC Choral Federation.
CHORAL STAGE! 2016 runs Mon-Fri August 15-26 at:

For children ages 9-16

CHORALSTAGE! is a day camp (9:30-3PM) that culminates in a performance at 5 pm
on the final Friday of camp. Music is drawn from popular musicals, vocal & choral literature etc. A storyline is created; the show is staged and choreographed and solo and acting parts are given out also. There is a strong emphasis on healthy vocal technique. This program is non-auditioned and open to all. Run by Marisa Gaetanne with Kin Ming Wong (piano), Carol Coulson (choreography) and Sula Boxall (Teacher & Children's Assistant) and former camper volunteers. Max 40 singers.

The singers will experience a wide range of music including classical, jazz, music theatre and popular selections. Solos and small ensemble work will be encouraged. Singers wishing to do solo work should prepare a short song for audition on the first day.

MARISA GAETANNE, M.Mus. Voice Performance (UBC) (Camp Director, Vocal Coach, Conductor) won the prestigious Eckhardt Gramattee Competition and the Northwest District Metropolitan Opera Auditions after studying in London, New York and Florence. Known for her beautiful coloratura voice and vivacious personality, Ms. Gaetanne has sung professionally for more than 20 years with solo recitals and orchestral engagements such as Mahler’s 8th Synphony, the Chorfest 2000 Brahms Requiem, and many performances of Carmina Burana. She has taught voice at UBC for the last 20 years and is Head of Voice at VCC School of Music (since 2001). Recently appointed as the Music Director of the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus and Youth Choirs project in July 2009, upon Bruce Pullan’s retirement, she continues to conduct the Piccolo and Junior levels in that program, as well as the Chorus itself. Ms. Gaetanne has also spent considerable time studying and teaching Kodaly and Orff techniques for young children, is a popular adjudicator, and gives workshops on vocal technique throughout the province.

CAROL COULSON (Camp Choreographer) attended Dalhousie University and UBC before graduating from the University of Lubin in Polish Folklore and choreography. She performed with the Halifax Theatre Ballet Company and New York City Ballet and developed her career choreographing spectacular events such as the Opening Ceremonies of EXPO 86 and the Papal Visit. She has directed many stage and opera productions including Benjamin Britten’s Noyes Fludde 
Carol will work with the children on staging and choreography for the final show of Choral Stage.

KIN MING WONG (Accompanist) is a Vancouver based private piano instructor and collaborative artist. He has his Bachelor’s in Piano Performance from UBC as well as a Master’s in Piano Performance from UVic. He also holds FLCM and LLCM performance diplomas from the London College of Music and an ARCT for Piano Performer and Piano Teacher.

SULA BOXALL (Assistant to Director) is an accomplished teacher in the Surrey school district. She studied voice with Marisa Gaetanne and has danced with Centro Flamenco for many years. She sang with the Vancouver Bach Children's Chorus throughout her childhood and has attended the last sixteen camps as Chorister, Volunteer and Assistant to Ms. Gaetanne!

10:15 – 10:30        BREAK
10:30 – 12:00   Musical rehearsal: vocal techniques, musicianship, sectionals.
12:00 – 12:45        LUNCH
12:45 – 1:45    Solo and small ensemble coaching, staging
1:45 – 2:00            BREAK
2:00 – 3:00      Staging/rehearsal

Singers should bring a water bottle, lunch and 2 drinks for breaks each day. Comfy clothing is a must.
A limited amount of financial assistance is available. To apply for a scholarship or bursary, please attach a letter to justify your request, and state the amount you are able to pay.
